We are looking for someone with strong analytical skills, who is a good listener, comfortable working with varied sources of information, and able to summarise findings clearly and simply. Knowledge of the migrant and racial justice sector is essential.

The work is expected to take approximately 12 days and has a budget of £9,000 (inclusive of VAT). Deadline for submissions is 17:00, Wednesday 25 March 2026.

Background

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s strategy was launched in October 2020 with three interdependent aims: Our Natural World; A Fairer Future; and Creative, Confident Communities. In 2022, we relaunched A Fairer Future, identifying Migrant Justice as one of five priorities.

Our current strategy runs through to the end of 2027, and we are now exploring the direction of our work beyond this. This review will help us assess our progress to date, understand the current context for Migrant Justice in the UK, and consider how our work should evolve.

Under our Migrant Justice priority, we aim to support a society where migrants, refugees and asylum seekers can understand and advocate for their rights, have those rights protected, and live in safety. We are currently working towards three long-term outcomes relating to access to legal support, stronger rights protections, and better-informed public discourse.

What the review will involve

The consultant will carry out a short review of our Migrant Justice portfolio, combining analysis of our existing work with an assessment of the wider context. The work will include:

  • Reviewing the changing context for Migrant Justice in the UK since 2020, including key developments in policy, practice, and the wider sector.
  • Assessing how well our current portfolio of funding aligns with our stated outcomes and where it is making a difference.
  • Identifying gaps in our work and areas where further activity or different approaches may be needed.
  • Considering how effective the approaches we support are in influencing change in the current context.
  • Exploring how our funding fits alongside other funders and our role within the wider Migrant Justice sector.
  • Identifying where Esmée’s funding and broader work could have the greatest impact in future.

The review will draw on desk research, learning from our existing grants, and discussions with relevant stakeholders.

Experience we’re looking for

  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Experience working with diverse information sources
