Who is our funding reaching

Migrants

Right to Remain

By 'migrants', we mean people who are first generation migrants and recent migrants to the UK.

Using the DEI Data Standard, we want to have a better understanding of who our funding is reaching and to help us identify structural inequity in our funding practice. This page shares initial analysis of data we gathered from organisations in our funding and applications we received during October 2021 to September 2022 in relation to migrants.

Migrant justice is one of our funding priorities in A Fairer Future, and we hope this data will help us make progress towards our goals alongside our commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Migrants in our funding and applications - by status

Charts 1 and 2 below show the percentage and number of organisations (in brackets) we classify as 'migrants' for the three areas we asked organisations about: the communities the work supports, the organisation's leadership, and the organisation's mission. It further breaks the data down by a specific status where relevant. Organisations could also select 'all migrants'.

They also show the number of organisations whose work, leadership or mission did not specifically relate to 'migrants'. We have classified these as 'no specific group'.

What we found:
  • Across both sets of data (for our funding and applications), the proportion of organisations whose work specifically supports migrants, whose mission targets migrants, and is led by migrants is broadly the same. (See charts 1 and 2)
  • In our funding, 8.8% (38 organisations) said their work specifically supports migrants and are also led by migrants. 17 of these support all migrants, whilst 12 specifically support asylum seekers and 7 specifically support refugees. (See chart 1)

Our funding vs applications

Chart 3 shows how our funding compares to data we have gathered on applications. Figures show the percentage that we have classified as 'migrants' for the communities the work supports, the organisation's leadership, and the organisation's mission.

What we found:
  • The percentage of our funding supporting migrants and is led by migrants is slighly higher than the percentage of applications. For instance, 8.8% of our funding is led by migrants, whereas 7.2% of applications are led by migrants. (See chart 3)

Average amount awarded

Chart 4 shows the average amount awarded in our funding, and compares the average for all our funding (our active portfolio) with funding for work specifically supporting migrants, and funding for organisations led by migrants.

What we found:
  • When looking at the average amount awarded to organisations, those that relate specifically to migrants is about 5% higher than the average amount awarded for our total funding portfolio. For instance, the average amount awarded to organisations led by and for migrants is £221,818 compared to our total funding portfolio average, which is £210,824.

Our funding - by aim

Chart 5 shows the percentage of our funding that we classify as 'migrants' along with which of our aims the funding aligns to most closely.

What we found:
  • In terms of alignment to Esmée's strategy, the majority of our funding that relates to migrants is towards A Fairer Future. For instance, of the 38 grants awarded towards work that specifically supports migrants, 33 (7.7% of our funding) are in A Fairer Future.
