Museums Association - Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund

The Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, run by the Museums Association, will give out £3.5m in grants from 2017 - 2019 for projects which develop collections to achieve social impact.

Museums, galleries and heritage organisations from across the UK can apply to the Fund via the Museums Assocation website for a grant of between £20,000 and £120,000 for a project lasting up to three years.

Background to the Collections Fund

We have been working together with the Museums Association (MA) on the issue of collections for over 10 years. The Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund has been running since 2011 with 72 projects so far receiving grants totalling £4.9m in its first eleven funding rounds. A list of the projects that have already received funding can be found on the MA website.

The Fund developed out of our Museum and Heritage Collections Strand, which we had been running for the previous three years and also from our experience of working with the MA on their Effective Collections programme.

The MA run the Fund on our behalf and we have a joint decision-making panel which meets twice a year.  We learned from our own Museum and Heritage Collection strand that the focus on funding collections development was highly valued within the sector and working with the MA has enabled a high standard of applications to be developed, drawing on the sector's own networks and the MA's expert knowledge.
