Esmée launches paid internships scheme

16 July 2012

We are excited to announce a pilot scheme for paid internships in the voluntary sector. The Beyond Profit internship scheme, delivered by Prospectus, will provide 10 people with the opportunity to work with a voluntary sector organisation in the London Borough of Hackney and/or its surrounding boroughs for a period of 6 months. The interns will be paid the London Living Wage and receive structured training and development.

Dawn Austwick, Chief Executive of Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, wanted to explore how the sector can address the issue of access to internships. This scheme is aimed at people who would not normally have the opportunity to take part in an internship programme, due to internships typically being unpaid and hard to access.

To overcome these barriers all interns on the Beyond Profit scheme will be paid and will live within a commutable distance of Hackney and its neighbouring boroughs. In addition, the recruitment campaign will not only be run across traditional online jobs boards, but also through social media channels and local community hubs within Hackney to make the scheme as accessible as possible.

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is the primary funder of the programme, with hosting organisations also contributing to the interns' costs. We are working with Prospectus, a specialist voluntary sector recruitment consultancy, who are delivering the programme on a cost basis.

The hosting organisations have now been confirmed as:

Arcola Theatre Production
Circus Space
East London Community Foundation
Half Moon Young People’s Theatre
Immediate Theatre
Inspire Education
Manor Gardens Welfare Trust
Quaker Social Action
Selby Trust
